The Department of Applied Social Science is a large inter-disciplinary unit, combining teaching and research interests in Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology, Social Work, Dementia and Housing Studies and a number of specialist centres.
The Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, together with its next-door neighbour the Proudman Oceanographic Institute, is a UK centre for excellence in the Earth & Ocean Sciences. The department occupies an extensive complex of new and refurbished research and teaching facilities accessed through the original Jane Herdman Laboratories. It is linked to the brand new Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, a facility of the UK Government’s Natural Environment Research Council.
The Division of Pathway Medicine is a research centre in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. The Division was officially formed on 1st February 2007 following the success and growth of the Scottish Centre for Genomic Technology and Informatics (GTI).
The new division builds on the work of GTI and incorporates the activities of new investigators who joined the centre in 2006. The Division has already proved itself successful in obtaining funding for new projects in new areas of research.
The Division of Psychiatry is situated in the grounds of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, Morningside, Edinburgh. The hospital covers many psychiatric specialities including general adult psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, old age psychiatry, addiction services and others. The Division includes in its staff many honorary members throughout Lothian. The Division has links to other centres both within Scotland and internationally.
The Department of Earth Sciences at UCL lies in the heart of London on the Bloomsbury campus. Our research spans a diverse range of activities including: crustal processes, Earth and planetary evolution, mineral physics, palaeobiology and palaeoclimatology, polar observation and modelling, natural hazards, environmental geochemistry and sedimentology.
EPCC is a bridge to the world of advanced computing for industry, commerce and research. With consultancy, training and collaborative contracts, EPCC aims to help others make the best of twenty-first century computing technology.
ESRIN, the ESA EO centre located in Italy, is responsible for collecting, storing and distributing EO satellite data. Through various programmes and via participation to EC-funded projects, ESA has obtained excellent contacts with the EU Earth science and EO user community. ESA is also active in promotion of relevant technology (Grid, digital libraries, portals, web-services) for various space-related applications, including Earth science & EO.
We work with ESA in the context of ENVRI, working with Roberto Cossu.
Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe (FLE) is Fujitsu’s main research and development centre in Europe. The areas of research and development carried out by FLE range from Grid Computing, through bio-molecular and physical sciences, photonics, quantum computing to mobile telecommunications. FLE has a strong commitment to the standards process and is involved in standards bodies in all areas of its research.
Professor Satoshi Sekiguchi and Isao Kojima lead a substantial team committed to computational sciences, e-Science and data-intensive methods. They have made substantial research contributions to the technologies for supporting these methods and have played a leading role in establishing relevant standards, such as those for storing and querying RDF data in distributed systems at OGF (WS-DAI-RDF) and in handling heterogeneous geoespatial observational metadata at OGC. They were early users of and contributors to OGSA-DAI.
