Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Liverpool

The Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, together with its next-door neighbour the Proudman Oceanographic Institute, is a UK centre for excellence in the Earth & Ocean Sciences. The department occupies an extensive complex of new and refurbished research and teaching facilities accessed through the original Jane Herdman Laboratories. It is linked to the brand new Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, a facility of the UK Government’s Natural Environment Research Council.

The department of Earth and Ocean Sciences consistently attracts excellent ratings for both teaching and research. It ranks highly in both the Times’ and Guardian’s university guides, and in government teaching inspections. Student satisfaction with the Physical Sciences at the University of Liverpool (which include the department’s degree programmes) is also high according to recent student satisfaction surveys. Our research profile is excellent, with the department rated Grade 5 (out of 5) in the University Funding Council’s most recent Research Assessment Exercises.

Our wide range of expertise across Earth and Ocean Sciences is unique. We currently have 43 academic and research staff, 13 technical and administrative staff, approximately 45 postgraduate (PhD) students, and 220 undergraduate students. Our academic staff are all acknowledged experts in their subject areas, with national and international standing. Consequently our courses are taught by experienced specialists with first-hand and up-to-date knowledge. We provide courses that are challenging and interesting, and a learning environment that is stimulating and supportive. We produce graduates with excellent career prospects.
