Biography

I have over 15 years experience in the public sector, banking and academia, addressing the challenges of managing data from different perspectives - from the strategic such as when planning for an organisation’s information needs, to the research level when designing techniques for automated knowledge discovery.

I have a PhD in Informatics from the University of Edinburgh; my thesis explored the use of ant colony optimisation for the automated induction of fuzzy rules from data.

I am currently a member of the Data-Intensive Research Group working on VERCE, an EU funded 3-year project developing a collaborative data-intensive research infrastructure for European seismologists.

My research interests increasingly lie in:
- the use of swarm intelligence techniques for knowledge discovery in distributed data storage and processing environments;
- real-time machine learning algorithms for dealing not only with large volumes of data, but also continuous data streams; and
- workflow management systems aimed at allowing scientists and researchers easy access to their data and analysis tools and services.
