Congratulations to Gary McGilvary on his PhD

We should all congratulate Gary on completing his corrections and on managing remote production of his thesis, "Ad hoc Cloud Computing", while in California, interning at Apple. It demonstrates the remarkable power of the Internet to arrange action at a distance! His thesis is now available here and should be read.

Gary's research, "Ad hoc Cloud Computing" is a much more remarkable and sustained demonstration showing how the unused power of an organisation's computers or altruistically offered computers can be harnessed effectively and made much more usable. He explored every step needed to make it easy to set up Volunteer Clouds, i.e., how to provide and manage a consistent and reliable Cloud running over unreliable, heterogeneous volunteer computers. He devised a technically elegant and practical approach to every stage, building on BOINC. He measured these carefully to demonstrate their power and efficiency.

But you don't want to hear about it from me, you should read his thesis, which I am glad to report is on this site, http://research.nesc.ac.uk/node/994. Please download it and have a good read; I enjoyed it every time I read it! His examiners primary concern was that more people should read and understand it, as they thought it was excellent research that should be widely applied.

Common Operations of Environmental Research Infrastructures

From the ENVRI Description of Work: "Frontier environmental research increasingly depends on a wide range of data and advanced capabilities to process and analyse them. The ENVRI project, 'Common Operations of Environmental Research Infrastructures' is a collaboration in the ESFRI Environment Cluster, with support from ICT experts, to develop common e-science components and services for their facilities. The results will speed up the construction of these infrastructures and will allow scientists to use the data and software from each facility to enable multi-disciplinary science."

"The target is on developing common capabilities including software and services of the environmental and e-infrastructure communities. While the ENVRI infrastructures are very diverse, they face common challenges including data capture from distributed sensors, metadata standardisation, management of high volume data, workflow execution and data visualisation. The common standards, deployable services and tools developed will be adopted by each infrastructure as it progresses through its construction phase. Two use cases, led by the most mature infrastructures, will focus the development work on separate requirements and solutions for data pre-processing of primary data and post-processing toward publishing. The project will be based on a common reference model created by capturing the semantic resources of each ESFRI-ENV infrastructure. This model and the development driven by the testbed deployments result in ready-to-use systems which can be integrated into the environmental research infrastructures. The project puts emphasis on synergy between advanced developments, not only among the infrastructure facilities, but also with ICT providers and related e-science initiatives. These links will facilitate system deployment and the training of future researchers, and ensure that the inter-disciplinary capabilities established here remain sustainable beyond the lifetime of the project."

The Data Intensive Group will be working principally on constructing an infrastructure reference model which ensures system interoperability.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), Scotland’s National Academy, is delighted to announce that it has today chosen the first members of the new “RSE Young Academy of Scotland”. This exciting development is the first of its kind in the UK. It will be part of a growing movement of Young Academies across the world.

The RSE has established this Young Academy as a unique opportunity to bring together some of the most able and innovative young academics, entrepreneurs, artists and professionals in Scotland. Every year a new round of applications will be encouraged bringing in a new cohort of members. The aim of the initiative is to stimulate creative ideas and collaborative working that will help address some of the key challenges facing Scotland and contribute to solving some of the global challenges of the 21st Century.

We are sure that Jano will drive this agenda on many fronts. Our hearty (and slightly belated) congratulations.

Hazard forecasting in real time: from controlled laboratory tests to volcanoes and earthquakes

The inherent limits to the predictability of brittle failure events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are important, unknown, and much debated. We will establish techniques to determine what this limit is in the ideal case of controlled laboratory tests, for the first time in real-time, prospective mode, meaning before failure has occurred.

This is important because the benefit of hindsight provides a significant positive bias in evaluating the predictability. With this experience, we will then apply similar techniques to natural systems to quantify the loss of predictability in an uncontrolled, more complex system at greater spatial and temporal scales.

A major technical aim is to develop an open-access, automated, web-based platform for real-time data collation, analysis and information exchange, enabling competing physical hypotheses and statistical methods to be tested and developed in fully prospective mode in an open, testable environment comparable to say daily weather forecasts. To do this will require applying state-of-the art statistical methods to the data in a high-performance computing environment, including formal quantification of model uncertainties and their effect on forecast consistency and quality.

To ensure that the resulting techniques are practicable and formally provide value for use in hazard planning and risk mitigation, they will be developed in collaboration with recent global earthquake forecasting initiatives and civil defence agencies. The results will improve our understanding of the physical processes controlling material failure in the laboratory and in the Earth, and will provide a sustainable, experience-based tool for rigorous fully probabilistic forecasting of volcanic eruptions and earthquake.

This project is currently under EFFORT project. Following the next link to get more information about it

Current methods and tools are failing to address data-intensive challenges effectively. They fail for several reasons, all of which are aspects of scalability. The deluge of computational methods and plethora of computational systems prevents effective and efficient use of resources, user interfaces are not adopted at a sufficient rate to satisfy demand for scientific computing and data and knowledge is created outside suitable contexts for collaborative research to be effective.

The Edinburgh Data-Intensive Research group addresses these scalability issues by providing mappings from abstract formulations to concrete and optimised executions of research challenges, by developing intuitive interfaces to enable access to steer these executions and by developing systems to aid in creating new research challenges. In this talk I will present several exemplars where we have dealt with scalability issues in scientific scenarios.

ShakeMapple : tapping laptop motion sensors to map the felt extents of an earthquake

Speaker(s):

Jano.van.Hemert

Presentation Type:

poster

There is a significant pool of untapped sensor resources available in portable computer embedded motion sensors. Included primarily to detect sudden strong motion in order to park the disk heads to prevent damage to the disks in the event of a fall or other severe motion, these sensors may also be tapped for other uses as well. We have developed a system that takes advantage of the Apple Macintosh laptops’ embedded Sudden Motion Sensors to record earthquake strong motion data to rapidly build maps of where and to what extent an earthquake has been felt. After an earthquake, it is vital to understand the damage caused especially in urban environments as this is often the scene for large amounts of damage caused by earthquakes. Gathering as much information from these impacts to determine where the areas that are likely to be most effected, can aid in distributing emergency services effectively.

The ShakeMapple system operates in the background, continuously saving the most recent data from the motion sensors. After an earthquake has occurred, the ShakeMapple system calculates the peak acceleration within a time window around the expected arrival and sends that to servers at the EMSC. A map plotting the felt responses is then generated and presented on the web.

Because large-scale testing of such an application is inherently difficult, we propose to organize a broadly distributed “simulated event” test. The software will be available for download in April, after which we plan to organize a large-scale test by the summer. At a specified time, participating testers will be asked to create their own strong motion to be registered and submitted by the ShakeMapple client. From these responses, a felt map will be produced representing the broadly-felt effects of the simulated event.

We will aim to give the geoscientists an idea of what expertise and services we have on offer in the areas of mapping formulations of problems to executable tasks, providing steering of these tasks through intuitive interfaces and facilitating systems for the creation of new challenges and knowledge.

This is also the kick-off meeting for the IDEA Lab project entitled "A scientific gateway for real time geophysical experiments", and we will plan the work for the next month.
