RapidSeis: a NERIES spin-off pilot

The objective of this six-month pilot project was to provide a simplified system to perform analysis of seismic waveform data through a web browser. The specific aims were that no data or application be download to the user’s computer, for the user to create algorithms to customise the analysis and to allow sharing of algorithms within the seismological community.

The project was funded by JISC who provided partial support for one of the researchers and allowed the three teams based at the University of Liverpool, ORFEUS and the UK National e-Science Centre in Edinburgh to meet regularly. The project culminated in a two day RapidSeis Workshop held at Liverpool in November 2009, where the results of the pilot project were presented along with representations from other groups about their latest developments in web services related to Seismology.

Happy end user of Rapid gives praise

"Just wanted to say that the Jython plugin tag in the new Rapid version is really useful. I have just started playing with it and have managed to create a portlet that gets the batch job lists back from various hosts and also now enables you to select a job using a radio button and then delete it or view it in more detail - no hack scripts required! I can also dynamically set the batch system commands so I can handle hosts that use SGE, PBS ot LoadLeveller with no external input required.

Right, I am now off to update the new cp2k HPCx portlet so it uses Jython rather than scripts to submit jobs.

We introduce the Next Generation Embryology project: Next Generation in two ways. First, because its aim is to revolutionise the way the next generation of developmental biologists are educated. Where instead of relying on plastic models and diagrams in books, the idea is to use a digital library that is indexed using virtual 3D models of mouse and human embryos. Second, in terms of next generation technology: this digital library will be navigated and used in the same way as people annotate and learn about the surface of the earth: by using their web browser and a Google Maps type interface.

3D developmental atlases are used in research for capture, collation and analysis of spatio-temporal data such as in situ gene-expression. The most advanced systems are based on a temporal series of 3D models. Examples are the EADHB human embryo atlas in Newcastle and the e-MouseAtlas in Edinburgh. Here we propose to use the 3D spatio-temporal frameworks in conjunction with a repository to deliver research and educational material directly in the context of the developing embryo. The primary interface will be similar in function to the familiar Google Maps but with full 3D indexing, spatial annotation and the overlay visualisation of complex spatial patterns. The project will deliver an integrated repository for embryology and developmental biology and open-source tools and APIs to enable institutions to build their own research and educational materials in the 3D framework.

Rapid Portals for Seismological Waveform Data

We explain how new e-science technology can be used to make modern seismology analyses available via web browsers. These analyses will be run on local compute clusters. The users of the analysis packages do not have to be aware of any of the underlying e-infrastructure; they focus on the domain-specific task at hand.

Including Jython as part of Rapid opens so many possibilities. Whole user interfaces and other processes can now be dynamically inserted directly in a running portal. Portlets can be defined on the go and change behaviour according to user decisions.
