 <title>Annual Progress Report for 2009</title>

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Notable achievements and events&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We have nearly doubled our publication rate, while increasing the average impact of the journals we publish in.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The whole research group is now housed in the Informatics Forum.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We have changed our name to the Data Intensive Research Group.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The group is now part of the Centre for Intelligent Systems and their Applications.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Two of our students took 3 of the 7 Informatics undergraduate awards for 2009.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Publications&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In 2009, we published&lt;br /&gt;
- 9 articles in journals,&lt;br /&gt;
- 13 papers in peer-reviewed proceedings,&lt;br /&gt;
- 2 conference proceedings and&lt;br /&gt;
- 1 book chapter,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;and another 7 are currently under review.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;People&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In this year, we said hello to Gagarine Yaikhom (Next Generation Embryology/ADMIRE) and Fan Zhu (SINAPSE PhD student).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And, we said goodbye to Qian Li (DGEMap), who now works for Mark Collin&#039;s company.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We had Mark Collins, David Bacigalupo and Laura Valkonen working for us on short term contracts. Mark is with his company Gulfstreeam, David with Southampton and Laura has another position in the university.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Short term visits were made by István Juhos, Peter Brezany, Sandra Gesing, Carlos Buil Aranda and Javier Fernández Muñoz.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Promising students&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In 2009, we successfully supervised the following students: 2 Informatics UG4, 2 e-Science MSc, 2 Informatics MSc and 1 Google Summer Code.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Both Rob and Yin passed their second year review and Chee Sun passed his first year review. Thomas is set to finish Spring 2010.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Projects&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The following projects started this year: Next Generation Embryology and RapidSeis. The start of GridQTL+ wll be postponed to mid-2010. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Rapid/ENGAGE finished in May, DGEMap in July and RapidSeis in November.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>First Annual Report for the National e-Science Centre Research Platform</title>

They were awarded an &lt;a href=&quot;http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/F057695/1&quot;&gt;EPSRC platform grant in 2008&lt;/a&gt;. Each year, the group produces an annual report to present their progress and research highlights and to engage their collaborators in defining research priorities, directions and sustainability plans.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Highlights are:&lt;br /&gt;
- We have doubled our publication rate since last year&lt;br /&gt;
- Jano van Hemert was awarded a Scottish Crucible&lt;br /&gt;
- Two of our students won three awards for their honours projects&lt;br /&gt;
- Dave Robertson has become head of the School of Informatics&lt;br /&gt;

 <title>Annual Progress Report for 2007</title>

&lt;p&gt;We have obtained 20 publications: 7 journal articles, 1 book chapter, 10 conference papers, and 2 conference proceedings (&lt;a href=&quot;http://research.nesc.ac.uk/publications&quot;&gt;http://research.nesc.ac.uk/publications&lt;/a&gt;).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Four research associates have joined the research group: Attila Gyenesei on an EGEE project, Liangxiu Han on FireGrid/NanoCMOS, Adam Barker on ADMIRE and Srihathai Prammanee (Orn) on Rapid.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Promising Students&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Rob Kitchen has started his PhD project in October. We successfully worked with 3 MSc e-Science students and 1 UG4 Informatics student.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Annual Progress Report for 2008</title>

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Notable Achievements&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The whole research group is now funded through grants in Informatics rather than Physics.&lt;br /&gt;
Informatics is once again the highest rated CS department in the UK (RAE2008).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The ADMIRE EU project had its first review in its 9th month and was rated excellent;&lt;br /&gt;
fantastic work by Liangxiu and Ally.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Rapid was released into the public domain and has been downloaded already over 300 times;&lt;br /&gt;
an extra mulled wine for Jos.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Nikos Kyprianou, an Informatics MSc students we had over the summer received the highest&lt;br /&gt;
average mark for the Computer Science Dissertation projects in 2008 (74%); good one Adam!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;David Rodriguez has acquired funding for a SINAPSE PhD student.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Publications and Presentations&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We had 7 publications in peer-reviewed proceedings; 5 articles in journals; 2 conference&lt;br /&gt;
proceedings; 1 book chapter and 1 book. We gave over two dozen presentations at external events.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;People&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In this year, we said hello to David Rodriquez (SINAPSE), Jean O&#039;Donoghue (DGEMap), Qian&lt;br /&gt;
Li (DGEMap), Chee-Sun Liew (PhD with Malcolm/Jano/Liangxiu) and Ben Wynne (PhD with Peter&lt;br /&gt;
Clarke/Philip Clark).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And, we said goodbye to Srihathai Prammanee, who is now in Finland on an ERCIM&lt;br /&gt;
fellowship; to Jean O&#039;Donoghue, who is now working for Cancer Research UK; Adam Barker,&lt;br /&gt;
who went to the University of Oxford; Yin Chen who, went from DGEMap across the road to&lt;br /&gt;
EDINA, but remains close through her PhD project; Jon Weissman, who returned to&lt;br /&gt;
Minneapolis after he visited us for a year.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Short term visits were made by Alexander Wöhrer, Ela Hunt, Peter Brezany and Sandra&lt;br /&gt;
Gesing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Promising Students&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Yin Chen is about to submit her first year report. Both Rob Kitchen and Luna De Ferrari&lt;br /&gt;
submitted and defended their first year report. Thomas French has started his third year&lt;br /&gt;
writing his first paper.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In 2008, we successfully supervised 1 Informatics UG4 (First Honours), 3 e-Science MSc&lt;br /&gt;
and 4 Informatics MSc (with 2 First Honours) students.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Projects&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The following projects started this year: NRP, ADMIRE, RCPER, SINAPSE and DReSNet&lt;br /&gt;
