&lt;p&gt;In this seminar I will demo the results of my work on the FireGrid project since 1st Jan. in which I have been:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;1.) Applying the Rapid software to FireGrid project scenarios&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;2.) Extending the above to include an initial provenance system - so the Rapid system archives all the information required to at a click re-run a particular experiment run for a particular experiment for a particular paper - and to compare the results to the archived original results.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;3.) Providing a path for scientists with limited IT literacy to be exposed to the Rapid functionality step by step; from a mode that only provides basic Rapid functionality to Rapid in its entirety&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;4.) Providing a Rapid-based system that can be used when the FireGrid software is running in Urgent Computing mode. For example when the start time of a real-time job depends on the technical difficulties encountered setting up a real furnace, or when the start time depends on when a real fire starts.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Planning Emergency Movement for the Built  Environment</title>

Current techniques used to solve these problems, like (Opasanon, 2004), make unrealistic assumptions about human behaviour during emergency movement. For example, they assume that occupants travelling through a building do not directly interact, and, therefore, provide instructions that presume people who arrive at a decision point at the same time will split up if told to do so. In practice, it is not clear how this could be implemented and how it would be possible to distribute risk exposure fairly. Furthermore, empirical research on human behaviour during emergency evacuation (for example, (SFPE, 2002)) indicates that people tend to have a social response to evacuation; people act as a group and try to evacuate with people to whom they have some attachment. We explore approaches that model a limited social response in the route planning process.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>FireGrid Cluster for Next Generation Emergency Respond Systems</title>

    * Sensing: Data collection from the emergency location with instantaneous and continuous relay to the emergency response system (involving a large array of sensors communicating with each other as a network and with the response system via the Grid);&lt;br /&gt;
    * Modelling: Simulation tools running in a predictive mode to model the evolution of the fire, establish its impact on the structure (and therefore predict the collapse), while also analysing the intervention alternatives and evacuation strategies;&lt;br /&gt;
    * Forecast: All simulations, analyses and communications to be achieved faster than the evolution of the emergency in real time;&lt;br /&gt;
    * Feedback: Processing of the continuously updated sensor and simulation data relayed back to the active response systems at the emergency location and to the emergency services to assist their intervention;&lt;br /&gt;
    * Response: Effective co-ordination of all intervention by a command and control system using an intelligent execution support aid.&lt;/p&gt;
