Applications invited for OSDC PIRE workshop

The second OSDC PIRE workshop will be held in the Informatics Forum from 17 to 21 June 2013. Applications are invited from researchers in the SICSA member institutions www.sicsa.ac.uk/home as a result of sponsorship from SICSA and CISA www.cisa.inf.ed.ac.uk. The first ten suitable applicants to register at osdc-pire-edinburgh2013.eventbrite.com will be accepted. Details of the programme of the event, discussing how to exploit Big Data using globally shared cloud facilities, can be found on page http://research.nesc.ac.uk/node/917. Ideal applicants will be part-way through a PhD and will either be trying to develop methods of using our growing wealth of data, or will be researching into tools or technology than enables such researchers to more easily and more effectively mine the gold from the data bonanza.

OSDC PIRE 2013 Edinburgh Workshop

Big Data and Cloud Computing:
The second OSDC workshop (http://www.opensciencedatacloud.org funded in part by the NSF PIRE programme) in Edinburgh will gather young researchers and experts to address today's challenges and to develop understanding in how best to exploit our growing wealth of data. How can we formulate questions and then use evidence from data to answer them without inadvertently introducing bias? How can we integrate data across boundaries from heterogeneous sources? How can we build machinery: hardware, software and internet protocols to enable this on a global scale? The participants, from North and South America, from Japan and from Europe will engage in talks, discussions, hands-on tutorials and debate. The outcome should be: new ideas, new understanding and lasting international alliances pursuing collaborative research.

Dr Sandra Gesing returns to join the DIR group

We are delighted to welcome Sandra back, some of you may remember her previous visits from the University of Tübingen, where she recently defended her PhD. We all congratulate her on that well deserved success. Her email address remains, sandra.gesing@uni-tuebingen.de. She can be found in room IF5.22. We will be working together on a graphical editor for DISPEL that also forms a proof-of-concept for a really versatile web-based generic workflow editor. She is on her way to a post in the USA, but there is a good chance of an extended visit while her new employer gets a visa in place <((-:}

NeSC Research Seminar Series

Speaker:

Drs Andre Luckow and Shantenu Jha from Rutgers University

This will be a talk in two parts: In the first part, we will motivate via a series of applications the concept of a scalable and general-purpose Pilot-Job. We will discuss the P* Model of Pilot-Jobs and present BigJob a SAGA-based Pilot-Job. In the second part of the talk, we focus on extension of the Pilot-Job concept to the challenge of "Big Data". Science that involves and depends upon large amounts of data, also requires overcoming various challenges, including managing large-scale data distribution and co-placement/scheduling with computing resources. Although there exist multiple approaches to addressing these challenges, an integrative and interoperable approach is missing. To address the fundamental challenges of co-placement and scheduling of data and compute in heterogeneous and distributed environments, we define the concept of Pilot-Data, in analogy with Pilot-Jobs. We present an overview of Pilot-Data and show how it supports multiple production distributed cyberinfrastructure, e.g., XSEDE, Open Science Grid, as well as Clouds. We validate the concept of Pilot-Data by establishing that it provides a simple abstraction for managing data placement, whilst supporting interoperability and late-binding.

Bio:

André Luckow is researcher in the Radical group at Rutgers University.
His current research focuses on the challenges of "Big Data" and the
design of abstractions and systems for supporting data and compute in
distributed, heterogeneous environments. Before joining Radical, André
studied at the University of Potsdam where he obtained a doctorate
degree in the field of distributed computing. His further research
interests include large-scale distributed systems, data-intensive
computing, machine learning and mobile systems.

This presentation's focus is on the computer science research performed at the National e-Science Centre as part of the University of Edinburg and the University of Glasgow. Another submission reports on the community support offered by the National e-Science Centre.

e-Science facilitates bidirectional flow of methods and practice between computer science and science, art, humanities and social science. It allows these disciplines to progress their research in more efficient and novel ways. It provides computer science with feedback to enable improvement of its methods. It encourages computational thinking, which will bring long-term benefits in data-intensive research.

First Annual Report for the National e-Science Centre Research Platform

The National e-Science Centre’s research (NeSC) consists of a research group in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh and a research group in Information Services at the University of Glasgow. They were awarded an EPSRC platform grant in 2008. Each year, the group produces an annual report to present their progress and research highlights and to engage their collaborators in defining research priorities, directions and sustainability plans.

Highlights are:
- We have doubled our publication rate since last year
- Jano van Hemert was awarded a Scottish Crucible
- Two of our students won three awards for their honours projects
- Dave Robertson has become head of the School of Informatics
- We have started an Alumni Programme for staff and students

National e-Science Centre Research Platform

To support e-Science at the National e Science Centre (NeSC) at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. The platform grant will underpin our user-support and research strategy. It will deliver a research platform for NeSC's large user community who apply e-Science and will be a platform for NeSC's own research into how to do a better job of meeting the diversity of our users' requirements. The detailed objectives are:

To enable continued collaborative relationships between the NeSC and innovating researchers in computer science and in application domains.
To formulate and execute e-Science application projects in a variety of research domains, including: Biology, Bioinformatics and Neuroscience; Medicine and Healthcare; Engineering; Astronomy and Particle Physics; Geographical and Social Sciences.
To assure sustainability of our core e-Science user support and research teams, maintaining expertise and agility in response to opportunities.
To underpin the role of NeSC in leading the embedding of e-Science across disciplines within the two universities and throughout Scotland, and to contribute significantly to e-Science programmes in the UK and internationally.
