The Intelligibility of Referring Expressions: Data Used in Experiments

This dataset was used to investigate intelligibility change with regards to change in referring expression. For details of the experiments and the conclusions reached see:

Bard, E.G, Anderson, A.H., Sotillo, C., Newlands, A., Doherty-Sneddon, G. and Aylett, M. (2000) Controlling the Intelligibility of Referring Expressions in Dialogue. Journal of Memory and Language, Vol 42, No 1, Jan 2000, pp 1-22. Here is a link to the abstract of this paper.

Giver's mentions are in red, follower's in blue. Shared landmarks are shown in a darker shade, unshared landmarks in a lighter shade. Clicking on the links will play you the citation speech (C), first mention/giving and second mention/giving of the appropriate landmark. Where the first and second mentions are by the same speaker, the citation forms will be the same. If there is a D in the denied column then the other speaker questioned the existance of the landmark after the first mention
