Functional Design Meeting Minutes by R Lindgren- PM Agenda • Opening • Project Manager = secretary (minutes) • General objectives • 3 presentations • New project requirements • Decision on remote control functions • Closing (we have 40 minutes!) Functional Design Objectives • User Requirements Specification: what needs and desires are to be fulfilled • Technical Functions design: what effect the apparatus should have • Working design: how the apparatus works to fulfill its functions Presentation 1 Marketing Jessie Levin Market Research 100 subjects user- lab frequency of certain buttons, relevance of those buttons Desires Attractiveness- thought remotes were ugly Would pay more for a fancy-looking remote Voice Recognition- inversely related to age Younger people want, older (60+) didn't desire Frustrations- losing remotes- (over 50%) Difficulty in learning how to use it- too many buttons Bad for RSI- (repetitive strain injury) Needs Design needs to match operating behaviour Only use 10% of buttons Changing channel and changing volume Flipping between channels Focus on essentials- not audio/video settings Ideas? LCD screen? Less is more- when it comes to the buttons Audio setting not as much importance/visibility Emphasis on look and fell to win over consumer Feels like the way they'll use it Avoid hand injuries Presentation 2 User Interface Designer Iain Technical Functions Design What a remote control actually is- provide certain effects on our television A communications device Way to communicate desires How go about designing Specifications- know what final product will be like What the end user will want from project How? Design prototypes Get feedback- ? How well they work in actual experiments Using a remote is very subjective experience A fairly standard piece of equipment Expect certain places for buttons Conventional design- don't shock people, but can have novel ideas Practicalities Technological What can we do with the current technologies- while keeping within price range Findings- on the web Examine existing TV remotes See what's good, what's bad How we can improve Make our product stand out from the large majority of products Two examples One is engineering- very advanced One is very basic- very user-friendly, but don't have functions to do extra stuff Need a balance Personal preferences Simple, big buttons for major tasks, does everything that need it to... Looks cool, feels good- ergonomical design Intra discussion Importance of looking cool 'that might be our market' Presentation 3 Alima- Working Design Industrial Designer What we're trying to do- figure out how the apparatus can fulfill its function Example of the coffee grinder- other things bring about to make it work Practical function How convernt all the elements to make sure everything gets done Make a schematic of the way the elements can combine to do it Findings Infrared is best way to get data to the receiver- don't need a sightline User interface- happens through a chip- controls flow of data Sender controls interface Components See powerpoint Designed to work together Working design schematic- cool little drawing Personal Preferences Long lasting energy source Easy to manipulate chip Straightforward interface Reliable/clear infrared signal New Requirements • Teletext has become outdated, due to the popularity of the Internet. o What is teletext? o very basic web browser- numbers- bring up index of what page you want o Can use to look up TV guides, sports, lottery, etc. • The remote control should only be used for the television, otherwise the project becomes more complex, which endangers the time-to-market. • Our corporate image should stay recognizable in our products. Our corporate color and slogan must be implemented in the new design. Decision on Functions • Who is our target group? • Younger group- attracted * Should we worry about voice recognition? * General consensus- no * Would add too much to the price * But how else to make the product 'cool'? • Who can pay for it? • Are we interested in technological advancement? An upgrade? Functions Objectives: simplicity and fashion Something to keep from getting lost Large buttons for essentials Possibility for extra functions Sliding screen for complicated functions Fashionable Long-life battery or charging station Closing • After meeting: complete questionnaire and summarization (to be sent by email), then lunch break • Then 30 minutes of individual work • PM: puts minutes in Project Documents folder • Individual actions - ID: the components concept - UID: the user interface concept - ME: trend watching • Specific instructions will be sent to you by your personal coach.
