About me

Currently doing a PhD in Machine Translation and Edinburgh University. Being closely watched by Philipp Koehn and (sometimes) Miles Osborne.

Before that, was working in medical imaging, and before that mostly in banking, with several detours and wandering.

Also did an Msc in Intelligent Systems @ UCL not too long ago.

I'm 5"10' tall, 7.5 stone, 34 going on 12 years old, sometimes dodgy hair and even dodgier make-up.

My uncle & aunt Mike and Lan have put together our interactive family tree :-)

Moses

My current claim to fame is I originally developed the Moses factored decoder for machine translation (with a lot of help & advice, of course). It was used at the Johns Hopkins Workshop 2006.

We're still tweaking and running the experiments, the signs are encouraging.

I encourage anyone with a interest in language translation and computers to download and try it out.

DJ'ing

I've got lots of dormant hobbies, including badminton, karate, football. Going to the pub is just much more fun these days! However, have been DJ'ing with two of my mates, Liam & Carl. We've had loads of gigs but I had to knock it on the head when I came to Edinburgh. This town is a desert !

When I was working

I worked for about 10 years as a programmer, mostly for investment banks in the City of London.

I mostly stayed in the Microsoft arena, but did occasionally venture to 'the other side'.

In a effort to make more money, I did some professional qualifications about Microsoft SQL Server. Have no cause to touch them now but if you're upgrading, migrating or planning a new database system, I try and dust of the cobwebs and help out.
