Title: Market-Based Coordination for Domestic Demand Response in Low-Carbon Electricity Grids\\
Abstract: In line with the efforts towards a low-carbon economy, we design a novel auction protocol for electricity retailers to procure and coordinate demand response (DR) from their domestic customers in order to reduce expensive balancing generation. Unlike price-signalled DR, we explore an alternative avenue in which households are given fixed retail prices, but they proactively submit DR offers in exchange for discounts. We formalise a concept of DR operational flexibility that can be integrated into the meter readings, it is independent from regular electricity use, and its performance can be measured. In addition, a verification method and two penalty schemes are designed to incentivise truthful reporting. We study a VCG-based mechanism for retailer and household coordination, and put forward a McAfee-based double auction for a multi-retailer setting. Finally, we prove some theoretical properties of these mechanisms and empirically evaluate its economic effects in simulations based on data from a survey of UK household electricity use.

If you want to be added to the mailing list for these meetings or propose a topic for one of the upcoming meetings please
contact the organiser. You should provide a URL from which the respective
paper(s) can be downloaded and a short paragraph describing your motivation or the kind of thing you want to talk about during the

Title: Agents of Jazz (?): Understanding and designing for interaction between improvising musicians\\
Abstract: Wireless, wearable sensor technologies provide opportunities to measure, analyse, and interpret human behaviours, emotions, and social signals. Subsequently, a dominant focus in research and industry is the use of these technologies for improving human-computer interactions - to make them more 'natural' or 'human-centred'. Far less attention is given to the opportunities for enhancing human-human interactions. In this talk I will discuss my PhD research, where I investigated how various sensor technologies might contribute towards the understanding and enhancement of co-present musical collaborations. I will describe experiments involving the collection and analysis of physiological, motion, and eye-tracking data from pairs of improvising musicians. I will also discuss The LuminUs - a device for providing performing musicians with live feedback about the gaze of their co-performers, which I developed and evaluated over the course of my PhD.

Title: Online Learning Techniques for Pricing in e-Commerce Scenarios\\
Abstract: The revenues of Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) come mainly from the profit they get reselling flight tickets. Therefore, the OTA's main goal consists in setting the optimal ticket price, i.e., the one which provides the maximum expected revenue from each flight ticket they sell. Since we are in a setting characterized by lack of information (uncertainty about the user preferences), non-stationarity (due to both competitors price oscillations and seasonal effects) and huge catalog (the profit for each flight should be considered separately), it is necessary to develop automatic techniques to handle the burden of the optimization procedure.\\
In this talk we formulate the pricing optimization problem as a contextual Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) and present the design of novel MAB algorithms able to exploit the characteristics of pricing. In the first part, we consider typical assumptions about the pricing setting (i.e., monotonicity of the conversion rate, unimodality of the expected profit function and constraints on cost budget) to enhance the performance of the state of the art MAB algorithms. After that, we exploit the logged information available about past OTAs transactions to partition the decision space (i.e., the ticket catalog) and consequently speed up the learning process.

Title: Distributed Linked Data as a Framework for Human-Machine Collaboration\\
Abstract: I will present a framework to allow human and machine agents to reason and coordinate actions without direct communication mechanisms by sharing distributed Linked Data resources. This framework addresses the problems of querying frequently-updating distributed datasets and guaranteeing consistency in case of concurrent updates. The motivation for this framework comes from the use-case of opportunistic automation of humans-generated procedures. Such procedures are normally completed by humans, but they could also be automated given the availability or relevant services.

Title: The unBias project\\
Abstract: In this talk, I'll introduce the unBias project, a collaboration between Nottingham, Oxford, and Edinburgh that aims to emancipate users against algorithmic biases for a trusted digital economy, with a particular focus on young people. Contrary to public opinion, young people care about their personal data and want a digital world more transparent, a digital world they can trust. For example, little is known about how Amazon is able to tailor advertisements and recommend products, or how Facebook decides which news Facebook users may be more inclined to read.
Working closely together with young "digital natives", we will study their attitudes and main concerns, and identify youth-led solutions for teaching critical thinking toward digital information systems. The main envisioned outcome of the project will be a 'fairness toolkit' that will include educational materials and resources co-designed to support youth understanding about online environments as well as raise awareness among online providers about the concerns and rights of young internet users. The talk will be a fairly high-level overview of this project that has only just started, together with some more conceptual discussion of fundamental problems in data-driven decision algorithmic making.

Finally, I will outline how one can, without mindreading, derive the agents intentions from what has been agreed upon (again, defeasibly).

"Abstract": I'm presenting joint work with Raquel Fernandez and joint work with Nicholas Asher and Antoine Venant on the same topic: how can two agents successfully communicate through only displaying and observing certain signals (i.e. without reading each others minds). I will first argue that this is even a problem. Then I will present a model that allows one to defeasibly compute what has been agreed upon in a conversation. Finally, I will outline how one can, without mindreading, derive the agents intentions from what has been agreed upon (again, defeasibly).

Title: Semantic Alignment for Agent Interactions: making communication meaningful in open environments
Abstract: The fact that the meaning of words depends on the context in which they are used is evident for any speaker: if someone asks for chips in a cafeteria, she will unlikely be expecting to get electronic circuits. In human dialogues this kind of semantic alignment happens permanently and has been extensively studied.

In this talk I will discuss how these ideas can also be applied to help achieve meaningful communication in artificial multi-agent systems, in which heterogeneous interlocutors will likely use different vocabularies. I will start by presenting a notion of context that is based on the formal specifications of the tasks performed by agents. I will then show how this context can be used by the agents to align their vocabularies dynamically, by learning mappings from the experience of previous interactions. In doing so, we will also rethink the traditional approach to semantic matching and its evaluation, tackling the following questions: What does it mean for agents to "understand each other"? When is an alignment good for a particular application? How can the interaction context help interoperability?

The Agents Reading Group is a new series of informal fortnightly meetings organised by Agents Group for all those interested in agents, multiagent systems and related topics. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss topics in agent research, to improve our understanding of the state of the art, and to share different views and ideas on various related research issues. The meeting is open to everyone. Surprise snacks & light refreshments will be served.

You should subscribe to our mailing list to be notified of future talks.

If you want to be added to the mailing list for these meetings or propose a topic for one of the upcoming meetings please
contact the organiser. You should provide a URL from which the respective
paper(s) can be downloaded and a short paragraph describing your motivation or the kind of thing you want to talk about during the
meeting. We welcome papers authored by proposers themselves, including (sketchy) working drafts and position papers so you can use these
meetings to get feedback on your own research ideas and findings.
